Orange County – Whitted Building A and B Roof Replacement

Orange County, NC | Hillsborough, NC

PROJECT DETAILS

The Orange County Whitted Building A and B is located at 300 West Tryon Street, in Hillsborough, North Carolina. Building A was built in 1922 with an addition constructed in 1936. Building B is joined to Building A by a Connector Building. The building is in the historic district and the design was reviewed with the Historic Society representatives. The total roof area for all roof areas is approximately 23,300 square feet, and the existing roof system consisted of a modified bitumen membrane with rigid insulation on a wood deck. The parapet walls had standing seam copper coping that was replaced as part of the project.

The new roof system consists of a gypsum-based thermal barrier and rigid board insulation (polyisocyanurate) that were mechanically attached, an adhered gypsum-based coverboard, and a fully-adhered single-ply PVC roof membrane. New copper sheet metal coping, counterflashing, conductor heads and downspouts, and passive vents were installed as part of this project.

The project included design and installation of two new access ladders (one interior and one exterior) and new roof hatches to provide safe access to the main roof areas. The existing roof drainage on Building B consisted of through-wall scuppers that were piped through the existing masonry exterior wall before out-letting to exterior downspouts. The project included installation of new internal primary roof drains and new internal secondary roof drains that were piped through an existing attic space before out-letting to new copper conductor heads and downspouts and new downspout nozzles, respectively.

All buildings were fully-occupied and operational for the duration of this project.
