Transformer Pit Grating Structural Modifications

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill | Chapel Hill, NC

PROJECT DETAILS

Transformer and high-voltage switching gear for the UNC-CH dental school was set in an underground pit next to the building. UNC-CH had a need to rapidly replace these units in the event of a failure in order to maintain operations. The original construction of the grating over the pit did not permit for rapid removal. Atlas Engineering designed structural modifications to grating to create rapidly-removable panels that can be lifted with the same crane used to change the electrical units.

This project included the structural modification of Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) components, unique modifications to the existing structure for enhanced owner use, and structural modifications done in-place with little impact to the University environment.
