Fountain Dining Hall Structural Upgrades

North Carolina State University | Raleigh, NC

PROJECT DETAILS

NCSU desired to renovate a portion of the interior of Fountain Dining Hall to expand the serving area to improve circulation. The existing layout had two separate serving lines and separate dining areas. Two small offices and a telecom room were between the serving lines. NCSU wanted to remove the two small offices and telecom room and combine the serving areas. In order to accommodate this upgrade, several interior walls including a load-bearing CMU masonry wall needed to be removed.

Atlas was brought in by the designer to evaluate the existing structure to determine the feasibility of structural upgrades, and what modifications were required to achieve the desired new layout. Atlas designed the shoring plan for the roof and removal of the interior load-bearing wall, and designed new footings, structural columns, beams, and bracing connections.
