North Carolina State Fairgrounds Structure Assessment

North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services | Raleigh, NC

PROJECT DETAILS

The structures included in the scope of work included the flower garden walkway as well as the front and rear porches of the Old Grist Mill, located at the NC State Fairgrounds. A professional engineer and an assistant engineer visited the site to photograph and document the conditions of each structure and recommend repairs to improve their structural stability. Recommendations included adding additional fasteners to connections, replacing isolated deteriorated wood members, and replacement of the existing rear porch at the Old Grist Mill. With the timeline of this project being shortly before the scheduled NC State Fair for 2022, the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services requested to postpone the demolition of the existing rear porch till after the 2022 State Fair, and asked Atlas to design temporary structural bracing for the rear porch. The repair design including installing new temporary posts as well as additional fasteners to strengthen the existing connections. This project lead to an additional project of designing a rebuild for the back porch, with roughly the same dimensions as the existing one.
